Treatment Options

As many as 25 percent of children diagnosed with ADHD may actually have symptoms of sleep apnea, and their learning and behavioral problems are instead related to poor/fragmented sleep.

Diagnosing Obstructive Sleep Apnea in children requires a visit to an expert physician. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends screening if these symptoms are present:

  • Restless sleeping
  • Loud snoring
  • Bed wetting
  • ADD and/or ADHD
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Mouth breathing
  • Night sweats
  • Hyperactivity
  • Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
  • Poor growth or overweight
  • Failure to thrive
  • Witnessed apneas or suspension of breathing

Several pediatric sleep disorder treatment options are available at Anderson, which may include an adenotonsillectomy followed by CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy, if required.
